It’s not like there’s some spare time hiding under the cushion seats, waiting to be found like spare change.
We have the same 24 hours that everybody else has. It is the one level playing field we’ve all got.
We get to choose what we fill those 24 hours with.
And we all know that somehow when things are important to us? We make time for it.
We make time to hang out or chat with the people who are important to us.
And for those who aren’t? We’re busy and don’t have the time.
We somehow find the time to binge watch on Netflix. We find the minutes and hours to play our favorite video games. Or do Facebook updates. Or check Twitter, Instagram, or our chosen social media all day long.
But that project? Or that exercise routine? Or that thing we need to study? We haven’t got the time.
Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time,’ is like saying, ‘I don’t want to. —Lao Tzu
I used to say “I wish I could, but I’m so busy and just don’t have time for X”.
As if I had no choice in the matter. As if someone else created the calendar for me.
When in fact, I filled my schedule with all the things that mattered most to me then—whether I care to admit it or not.
So when I say “I don’t have time for X” what I’m really saying is that “X is not as important as the other things in my life right now, and I won’t make time for it.”
On the issue of time:
1. Make time for people, activities, and things that you say are important to you.
It behooves each of us to define—consciously—what is important to us. Sometimes, we need help in prioritizing because everything feels important.
2. Put it on the schedule.
We’ve all heard it before… and it is true: What’s not scheduled isn’t real. We’ve got to put it on the calendar. That’s the signal that something is important. We’ve got to show ourselves that we’re making time for “it”.
3. And if you didn’t schedule it, admit that it’s not important to you after all.
Let’s not waste energy trying to rationalize or explain our way out. It simply is this: Whatever it was, it wasn’t as important as the ones for which we made time.
