Can you guess the number one response I get from my podcast guests to the question, “What helped you during your transition”?
It’s not beaucoup money in the bank.
It’s not mindset or attitude.
It’s not even a well laid-out plan.
It’s community. It’s being around a supportive group of people who were going after similar goals or have interest in the same things.
And there’s science behind this. It’s the reason why AA works for example. Or book clubs. Or for that matter, churches and religious organizations.
Being surrounded by people who are motivated to climb the same mountain you are climbing is one of the (if not THE) most important keys to success.
It also happens to be the #1 thing I would change if I could have a mulligan.
When I decided to make a career pivot in 2014, I didn’t seek this out. For whatever reason, I had a ‘lone wolf’ mentality, thinking I can do it all. I can work hard and apply myself and do/be #allthethings.
I made my life so much harder. It made reaching my goal feel more daunting and out-of-reach. It made everything so much heavier.
Today, I’m an active member of a small group of business owners. I’ve found myself a tribe. A home team.
Somewhere I can go to ask the questions that are ‘un-google-able’ and get answers from people who are in the trenches. Somewhere I can get fresh ideas from just by hearing about what’s working for others. Somewhere I can go for a different perspective, so I’m not in my own echo chamber. Somewhere I can get a jolt of inspiration and motivation—especially when things feel overwhelming and impossible.
So, I asked myself, “Where can professionals go for this same stuff?”
It’s not LinkedIn. (When was the last time you felt comfortable asking a ‘real’ career question on LinkedIn?)
It’s not Facebook. (Ugh)
It’s often not your boss. Good luck asking HR. And many of us aren’t lucky enough to have a bunch of colleagues with whom we can really talk about ‘career-stuff’.
This nagging question is what lead me to create AndThriving.net
AndThriving is a network for professionals who want to build resilient and thriving careers.
It comes from a core belief that in this modern world of ours, we all should have the opportunity to grow and thrive in and through our work. AND that we get further along in our goals if we’re surrounded by people who have similar goals. Climbing the same mountain.
I would like to invite you to join me + a few colleagues who jumped in early to form the merry band.
It’s an open network… in the sense that there is no fee to join.
But it’s private… in the sense that it’s just really only for people who are serious about their work and what they want to achieve through their careers.
We’ve only just begun. But we have a big hairy audacious goal, which you can read about here.
I would love for you to join us and create a world where we all get to thrive in our chosen fields of work.
I hope to see you inside AndThriving.
