There are many ways to reinvent ourselves and our careers. Starting a side passion project can help achieve the same results without a complete career makeover. In fact, it may be the more practical and reasonable approach for many.
Vanessa Soto is a marketing and advertising professional. This is her full-time career. It is work that she’s good at and she actually enjoys.
But a few years ago, she became interested in personal growth and development. She completed a life coaching training and subsequently started a life coaching practice on the side.
Surprisingly, Vanessa discovered a side benefit from this approach. She began showing up at her job differently and started appreciating her 9-to-5 again. She decided that instead of changing career paths altogether, she would continue to nurture her life coaching practice as a side passion project, in addition to her successful marketing and advertising career.
I started to look at work for what it really is—the thing I’m doing to support myself—versus the end-all, be-all fulfillment.—Vanessa Soto
Because of her own experience, she sought out other people who have deliberately chosen a similar side project approach instead of an outright career change. She turned those conversations into a podcast, and in this episode, she shares not only her own experience but also, her observations coming from those interviews.
