“Choosing to love your fate sounds great. On a regular day. When you really need a reminder is when something terrible happens.”
Okay. So we live in a weird world right now. Lots of sad, disconcerting news to go around and not enough insight on how or when this is all going to end. I find myself re-reading Ryan Holiday’s book, The Obstacle is the Way, which is all about Stoicism and its central teachings.
I wanted to explore the topic on the show but I’m still an early student. So, I need someone further ahead of me!
Enter Brendan Hufford, who has not only written about Stoicism but sports two tattoos on his forearm to remind him of its teachings. And was willing to geek out with me on the topic.
So today, we’re talking with Brendan about Stoicism, and Amor Fati, and Memento Mori, and Amelia Earhart, and Thomas Edison and the big fire. We also talk about this terrible diagnosis that Brendan and his wife learned about their son when he was just 2 years old, which made Brendan really embrace the idea of Amor Fati. Towards the end, we also talk about what Brendan actually does for a living.
