Coming up with your career move’s Big Picture is a necessary first step. But what if you’ve done the work but you still can’t decide on your best option? What now?

I often talk about the importance of developing your Big Picture when planning your career move. I consider this really the most important first step. Because your Big Picture gives you a sense of direction.
Clearly articulating your Big Picture is like entering your end destination into the GPS. There may be various routes that can take you there. But first, you must figure out what your “there” is.
What happens though, after you’ve come up with your Big Picture? What do you do with it?
And most importantly, what if your Big Picture doesn’t directly or clearly lead you to your next step?
That’s what we talk about in this episode.
Depending on how specific your ambitions are, your Big Picture can lead you directly to your next steps.
For example, you might say that your ambition is to be a nurse. Clearly, this is a specific career objective.
Your next steps can be easily identified. You may still have questions and doubts about it but by and large, you know what you want to go after.
But just as often, I’ve seen Big Pictures that effectively provide the direction although it is rather open-ended when it comes to your career path or next steps.
For example, you might say, “I want to be in the healing profession or I want to help others feel and get better.”
This can be any number of things: a career as a dietician, a social worker/therapist, a career in health coaching, you can pursue a career as a nurse or a physician’s assistant.
Any of these paths can, in theory, lead you to your Big Picture.
But what is the right path for you to pursue?
We work on this in detail in one of the sections of the Confident Pivot Framework – which all members of the AndThriving have access to.
In this episode, I give a summary of the 3 key steps, in case you are in this situation.

I’ve studied career pivots and interviewed hundreds of folks who have made career pivots across different professions. One thing I know for sure is that there isn’t one right way.
Career pivots are personal and unique to the person who’s doing it.
But there are common patterns that we can glean from those who’ve done this before and adopt those so we can make ours as smooth as possible.
Today, we covered several of those common patterns.
Remember that your Big Picture is your end destination, and there can be more than one route to getting there. Don’t get frustrated that you “don’t know”. Instead, try and feel excited about the discovering your best path forward!
