In this the last episode in the How to Get Unstuck Miniseries, we cover the fourth common cause for getting stuck, how to recognize and see if this issue applies to you, and ways that you can address it.
Steven Covey, in his book “7 Habits of Highly Effective People”, says, “Begin with the end in mind”.
To begin with the end in mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination. It means to know where you’re going so that you better understand where you are now and so that the steps you take are always in the right direction. It’s incredibly easy to get caught up in an activity trap, in the busy-ness of life, to work harder and harder at climbing the ladder of success only to discover it’s leaning against the wrong wall.
Clearly, figuring out what you want to do is key to having meaningful work. And it’s the first step to getting unstuck and improving your work-life.
This isn’t always a slam dunk, however. While there are many who know intuitively what they want to do, for many others it doesn’t come that easy.
A lot of us are still trying to figure out what we want to be when we grow up. Right?
The older we get, the higher the stakes.
It’s one thing to be in our early 20s and not be sure about what we want to do for a career. As we get older, the pressure to find our thing increases. We want to do meaningful work and make a living. We want our work to matter. We want not to be depressed about our work-lives!
The problem is, the longer it is that we’re not clear about what we want to do with our careers, the higher the likelihood that we’ll settle for something that may not be a fit or worse, get stuck with something we don’t even really want.
In this final episode in the How to Get Unstuck Miniseries, we get into what having unclear targets mean, how to recognize if this applies to you, and how to address it.
