As promised in the very first episode of this podcast, I will, from time to time, provide an update on my career reinvention. I figured, year-end is one of the better times in the year to do this.
It’s a natural time for reflection and for looking ahead. And though I’ve always done this process, I’ve not always shared it with any regularity. So, one of the things I’m looking to establish or commit to is a year-end round-up to provide transparency and to share my own career journey with you.
If you’re a regular listener of the podcast or follower of Second Breaks, you’ll know that I am a second breaker myself. After a long and successful corporate career (by my own definition of success), I decided to step off the corporate ladder and climb an entirely different ladder–entrepreneurship and business ownership. I officially started a business in the Spring of 2014, and there have been a lot of twists and turns since then.
I’m not a business coach by any means of the imagination, and will not dare pass on my experiences as a business owner as suggestions for how to start a business.
But I will share my experiences with you from the perspective of someone who’s decided to change career direction, and chose to build a new path for myself.
In this episode, I cover four things:
Part 1: A Review of my 2017 Resolutions
In the first section, I review my 2017 goals and resolutions. I had 5 resolutions and 6 goals (!) at the start of 2017. I know. My one big challenge is that I get a little too excited and tend to come up with a long list of goals at the beginning of the year. That’s the optimist in me. Hah! But this is something I’m looking to address this year. In any case, I first reflect on my 5 resolutions in 2017, what worked and what didn’t.
Part 2: What I Achieved This Year
There are three things that I accomplished and most proud of this year, mainly because they were a direct result of working on my resolutions. Below is the list of these three achievements, and in this section, I talk about what contributed to my meeting these goals:
- The Second Breaks Podcast
- Steer Your Career Workshop
- Gaining clarity on the future direction of Second Breaks
Part 3: Goals That I Missed
In full transparency, I didn’t accomplish all my stated 2017 goals. I missed three of them and wanted to share my analysis, what happened and why I missed those goals.
Part 4: Looking Forward to 2018
Lastly, I talk about my resolutions for the coming year, a new process that I’m incorporating in my year-end process, and my one major goal for 2018.
I define resolutions as simply habits that I want to work on or adopt. And for 2018, I have 5 resolutions, some of which are carry-overs from this year.
My 2018 Resolutions:
- Eating healthy
- More physical activity
- Bolder decisions and actions; less afraid
- Building and nurturing relationships
